Give your child a glimpse into life during the Civil War in a unique educational experience in a children’s camp held in August on the historic Cedar Mountain Battlefield.
The educational camp is designed for children aged 7 to 13 years old is held at Cedar Mountain Battlefield. Participants will enlist in a military unit alongside living historians to learn about camp life and military maneuvers. This day camp will feature soldiers’ drills, equipment handling, experiences of life during the Civil War, and wrap up with a mock battle.
Living history interpreters will lead the participants through the following experiences:
- Enlistment;
- Induction and interview with a regimental surgeon;
- Equipment Issuance – haversacks & replica muskets;
- Manual of Arms – Drill;
- Maneuvers – Drill;
- Combat; and
- Discharged.
The camp is being offered by members of the Valley Guards 10th Virginia Infantry Regiment, an educational living history unit with members from across the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. The Valley was the home of the 10th Virginia and many of the members are descendants of the original regiment.
