Join Global Big Day at Cedar Mountain Battlefield

Every year, on Global Big Day, bird enthusiasts and nature lovers pause to observe and record the incredible diversity of birds in their corners of the world. Their observations help scientists and researchers monitor bird populations, track migration patterns, and identify habitats that require conservation attention. This event, organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and eBird, encourages participation by individuals of all ages and skill levels.

Old Rag Master Naturalists is partnering with Cedar Mountain Battlefield and Wild Birds Unlimited/Culpeper to offer an opportunity to observe and collect data on the birds at the Battlefield as well as to learn more about the Civil War and the battle that occurred at Cedar Mountain.

Join the 3rd birding and history tour at Cedar Mountain Battlefield. The 162 acres of protected land has rolling topography with three distinct environments – two open fields bisected by the original Culpeper Road bed, shaded pond, and wooded area that includes a witness tree from the 1862 battle.

These areas, along with approximately 40 adjacent acres, will be part of the new Virginia State Park tentatively called Culpeper Battlefields to be opened this Summer. The new State Park will also include Brandy Station’s 1200 acres located 15 miles to the north.

Habitat:  Mature forest, open fields, a pond, multi-use trails and areas targeted for planting of native flowers, grasses and shrubs.

Accessibility: Trails vary with some level ground and also some sloped areas; may require use of cane or walker, depending on mobility needs.

Date: Saturday, May 11th
Time: 9:00-11:00 AM
